In Peru we were drawn to the beauty, simplicity and meaning of the Andean cross or Chakana. Ours sits in a window so the light outlines the marbled pattern of the dark green stone.
This icon is the Incan representation of a bridge between heaven and earth. Each of the steps of the cross represents a realm of the universe. From the four directions, to the spiritual, mental, physical aspects of the human, to the values of education, work and love, to the upper, middle and lower worlds, the Chakana is one of the most common symbols in the Andean culture.
