Charcoal Squares from Africa

We chose these charcoal pieces from the Horn of Africa because they are easier to light than the charcoal rounds we have tried. They burn a little longer and they are a cool silver color.

To use loose incense such as our Somalia frankincense or rose Uud from Yemen, fill a small ceramic bowl with sand or salt or use our Uud burner (sold separately). Carefully light the edge of the charcoal square. We find it easiest to light holding it with tongs over a gas stove flame for about 30 seconds then transferring it to our Uud burner. Place a piece or two of incense on the charcoal square.

The charcoal will continue burning for some time allowing you to add another piece or two of resin incense or small piece of rose uud. When finished let the charcoal extinguish completely and the bowl or incense burner cool before cleaning.
