This fan of approximately 18 naturally shed feathers from pet Macaws is a mix of blue, green and turquoise. It includes 10 prized Scarlet tail feathers and is finished with hand woven Peruvian cloth, brown leather, silver beads and 6 peacock eye feathers - 3 in front and 3 in back. A sun has been counter-sunk in the end of the wooden handle.
The fans made from macaws feathers are ancient ceremonial objects. Many fans have been found in ruins throughout the American Southwest and suggest early contact and trade with Mexico. In the Archeological Museum at Mexico City there is an extraordinary Macaw feather fan that was found at Teotihuacan.
Today, feather fans are still widely used in Native American and spiritual ceremonies as part of a purity ritual called smudging. Fans stir up smoke from burning sage, which is believed to dispel negative energy.
Each handcrafted fan is a unique original work of art and
is made from feathers naturally shed by live birds. No two are alike. You are encouraged to use these powerful objects of art in your ceremonies and to add magical energy within your home.
