Our sweetgrass comes from central Saskatchewan, Canada. It is gathered and braided traditionally by a Woodlands Cree family from the Parklands. The Cree remain Canada's largest native group, with 200,000 registered members and dozens of self-governed nations.
To Native American’s burning sweetgrass brings good energy after they have smudged with sage cleansing their home of negativity. When sweetgrass is burned a sacred place is made for Creator to provide love energy.
The braid is used by lighting one end, allowing it to burn for a few seconds then gently blowing out the flame. The grass will smolder. Fan the smoke to your heart, then to your mind, then around your body and finally return the smoke to your heart.
A prayer said during this process may be, “Creator please cleanse me of negativity and fill me with the positive energies of love.”
