Revered by the Swahili women of the East African Coast, uud or incense made from pure Yemeni rock roses has been one of the secrets of feminine Eastern beauty and mystique for centuries. Rather than use modern liquid perfumes with a strong smell and many chemical components, Swahili women prefer the delicate and lingering scent of rose uud. Burnt in our primitive Somali uud burners the scent of rose brings an aura of peacefulness and serenity to a room generating an overall sense of well-being.

To use loose incense such as our Yemeni rose uud, fill a small ceramic bowl with sand or salt or use our African uud burner (sold separately). Carefully light the edge of the charcoal square. We find it easiest to light holding it with tongs over a gas stove flame for about 30 seconds then transferring it to our uud burner.

Break the uud round into smaller pieces (it is strong so a little goes a long way). We break each round into 4-5 pieces. Place one small piece of uud on the charcoal square. The uud will begin to smoke releasing its beautiful fragrance.

The charcoal will continue burning for some time allowing you to add another small piece of uud. When finished let the charcoal extinguish completely and the bowl or burner cool before cleaning.
